What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that increases the size of the breast through the use of a breast implant.

Most of our patients are seeking natural looking results, not over-the-top transformations. Our patients want to enhance their breasts in a natural, proportionate way. The goal should be to improve the breasts that the patient has always found to be deficient or to restore volume and shape after pregnancy or weight loss.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, augmentation surgery is a choice to consider. Breast enlargement can increase the fullness and projection of your breasts, improve the balance and proportions of your figure, and improve your self-image and self-confidence.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

The surgery is outpatient, which means the patient goes home the same day and is usually performed in our in-office AAAASF accredited surgical center. Typical surgery can range from 1 1⁄2 – 2 hours for breast enlargement alone but can be longer if other procedures are performed at the same time. After the incision is made, the surgeon then creates a pocket in the tissue either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle. The placement of this pocket will depend on the amount of breast tissue the patient has, and the type of implant chosen. Once the breast implants are in place, the surgeon will then check the symmetry of the breasts before closing your incisions.

Silicone vs Saline Breast Implants

Breast implants can be filled with either silicone or saline (salt water) depending on patient preference. One of our board-certified plastic surgeons will help guide you through the decision-making process and help you determine which implant is right for you.

Implant brands include Mentor silicone and saline and Allergan Natrelle  breast implants. Both products include high profile, moderate profile, moderate plus profile and shaped implants.

Breast Augmentation with a Breast Lift

Breast Augmentation alone does not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be necessary in combination with breast augmentation. Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your augmentation.

Can I Have a Mammogram with Breast Implants?

Patients can still have mammograms with breast implants. It is important to let the person performing your mammogram know that you have breast implants so that they can take special views to help see all of the breast tissue.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Recovery varies by the type of procedure and patient factors. Many patients are able to return to work days after surgery and can perform regular activities at 4-6 weeks. Your surgeon will be better able to discuss individual recovery length during your consultation.

In September of last year, Dr. Budny performed surgery on me for breast augmentation. My husband and I are still happy with that surgery!
